Mostafa Asal & Nouran Gohar Crowned 2025 PSA El Gouna International Open Squash Champions

Egypt’s World No.1s, Mostafa Asal and Nouran Gohar triumphed at the 2025 El Gouna International Squash Open, securing victory over Ali Farag and rising star Amina Orfi respectively, in what proved to be a dramatic conclusion to the spectacular Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Squash Tour event staged at the El Gouna Conference & Culture Center in El Gouna, Egypt.

Both finals carried more than just silverware. Mostafa Asal’s comeback victory over four-time World Squash Champion Ali Farag ensures he retains his World No.1 ranking, having recently overtaken his compatriot with a win at the 2025 Optasia Squash Championships in England. In the women’s championship, 17-year-old Amina Orfi was bidding to become the youngest-ever winner of a PSA World Squash Tour Platinum event, but Nouran Gohar halted the teenager’s historic charge with a commanding performance.

With the men’s World No.1 ranking hanging in the balance, the showdown between Mostafa Asal and Ali Farag delivered an epic contest. Both players showcased their full arsenal from the outset, utilising the full court with a mix of pace and precision. Mostafa Asal edged ahead at 6-5 in the first, but a series of unforced errors opened the door for his compatriot, who capitalised with six straight points to claim the opening game 11-6.

The pattern continued into the second game, with Ali Farag expertly disrupting Asal’s rhythm. While the World No.1 attempted to raise the tempo, Farag slowed play intelligently, injecting pace at opportune moments. His tactical acumen paid off again as he doubled his advantage, taking the second game 11-7.

Game three saw Ali Farag continue his masterclass, frustrating his opponent who struggled to hit winners against the three-time El Gouna Squash International Champion. Leading 7-4, Ali Farag appeared to be cruising to victory, but Asal roared back, seizing on a few loose shots and surged forward to close-out the third game 11-9.

With the momentum swinging, Mostafa Asal dominated the fourth game, levelling the match at 2-2. In the decider, the 23-year-old World No.1 found his highest gear and raced to a 7-1 lead, forcing Farag into all corners at pace. Despite a late fightback from Ali Farag, Asal’s charge was unstoppable. He closed the match 11-5, clinching his second PSA El Gouna Squash International crown and fifth PSA World Squash Tour title of the 2024-2025 squash season.

Earlier in the evening, Nouran Gohar and Amina Orfi treated fans to an enthralling women’s final. Both players, known for their physicality and precision, delivered high-quality squash. It was Amina Orfi who made the brighter start, storming to a 7-2 lead. Nouran Gohar, however, clawed her way back to level at 7-7 before Orfi steadied herself to take the opening game 11-7.

The teenager maintained her momentum in the second, racing to a 4-1 lead. But the World No.1 soon found her range. Gohar began to hit her marks, especially around the middle of the court, nullifying Orfi’s attacking instincts. With precision hitting, she took the next two games 11-7 and 11-6.

The fourth game was marred by a few refereeing interruptions, but it was Gohar who coped better with the stop-start rhythm. Leading 5-3 after a sublime forehand drop, the defending champion surged ahead to 10-5, earning five match balls. On her third opportunity, she unleashed a signature backhand kill to seal victory.

With her fourth PSA World Squash Tour title of the 2024-2025 squash season and a third consecutive PSA El Gouna Squash International crown, Nouran Gohar underlined her dominance at the summit of the women’s game, while her opponent’s fearless run marked Amina Orfi as a future force on the world stage.
