Diego Elias becomes first World No.1 from South America

Diego Elias of Peru has become the first squash player from South America to be ranked World No.1.
The Professional Squash Association (PSA) have confirmed that the 26-year-old Peruvian has overtaken the suspended Mostafa Asal of Egypt to go to World No.1 for the first time in his career.
Despite being beaten by former World No.1 Ali Farag of Egypt in yesterday’s final of the British Open in Birmingham, Diego is enjoying his most successful season of his career to date, winning four PSA World Tour titles, including the U.S. Open and J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions in New York.
“It’s a dream come true… I ended last year playing very well, I got to two finals, so I knew I was playing well, but I didn’t win the titles,” said Elias who becomes the twenty-third man to be ranked World No.1. “But at the start of this year I did a lot of work and I think it paid off at the Tournament of Champions and the next two tournaments.”
Mohamed ElShorbagy of England moves up to World No.2, his highest World Ranking since October 2021, whilst Mostafa Asal falls two places to World No.3.
British Open Champion Ali Farag moves up one place to World No.4, while New Zealand’s Paul Coll, the 2-time British Open Champion who lost to Diego Elias in the semi-finals of last week’s British Open, falls one place to World No.5.
In the Women’s PSA World Rankings, British Open Champion Nour El Sherbini has overtaken fellow Egyptian Hania El Hammamy to return to World No.2.
