The 12th edition of the El Gouna International Squash Open starts today in Egypt, marking the commencement of yet another thrilling chapter on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour. The prestigious PSA World Tour Platinum event has attracted the attention of top-tier squash players and anticipation is high as 64 players brace themselves for the opening round for advancement to the second stage. Amongst the contenders, the top 16 seeds will enter the fray in the 2nd round, promising a spectacle that captivates both local and global audiences alike.
Leading the charge as the No.1 seed is the formidable Ali Farag, poised to defend his title and clinch a remarkable seventh triumph of the 2023-24 squash season, along with his third El Gouna International Squash Open title. Boasting an unparalleled level of consistency, the World No.1 has stormed through the season, winning all before him save for encounters with Paul Coll and, more recently, Mostafa Asal. With an unyielding determination to evade a third consecutive final defeat, Ali Farag sets his sights on rewriting the record books with a monumental campaign.
Meanwhile, Paul Coll of New Zealand has defied sceptics with a string of impressive performances, securing four PSA World Tour titles and appearing in six finals this season. The Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist has shown newfound dimensions to his gameplay, reaping the rewards of his evolution. Eager to extend his impressive form, Paul Coll targets a third consecutive triumph, eyeing his maiden victory at the El Gouna complex.
Not to be overlooked is Mostafa Asal, the 2022 champion, whose latent potential bubbled to the surface at the recent Black Ball Squash Open. After a series of near-misses in major events, Mostafa Asal delivered a masterful performance, claiming the PSA World Tour Gold event title by defeating Ali Farag in a gripping four-game finale. With a penchant for peak performance on home turf, Mostafa Asal garners fervent support from the Egyptian faithful as he sets his sights on capturing his first PSA World Tour Platinum event victory since December 2022.
In the women's division, Nour ElSherbini seeks redemption following an unexpected semi-final exit in last year's event, a rare setback in an otherwise dominant season. Despite a quarter-final defeat in the London Squash Classic, only her second such loss before the semi-finals since 2020, Nour ElSherbini remains resolute in her pursuit of victory, eager to reassert her supremacy on the squash court.
In a notable development, the withdrawal of World No.2 Hania El Hammamy elevates defending champion Nouran Gohar to the No.2 seed position. Fresh from her triumph at the Black Ball Squash Open, 'The Terminator' aims to replicate her success on the PSA World Tour, overcoming a plantar fascia injury that sidelined her for a significant portion of the season. With determination coursing through her veins, Nouran Gohar sets her sights on securing consecutive titles in a bid to affirm her status amongst the sport's elite.
Rounding out the top seeds are European duo Nele Gilis and Georgina Kennedy, occupying the No.3 and No.4 positions respectively. Both players bring a formidable presence to the tournament, with Georgina Kennedy recently claiming her maiden victory of the season at the German Squash Open. Meanwhile, Nele Gilis seeks to defend her World No.4 ranking amidst stiff competition, buoyed by her memorable run to the final at the 2023 El Gouna International Squash Open last season.
As the stage is set for a thrilling showcase of skill and determination, the El Gouna International Squash Open promises to deliver riveting encounters and unforgettable moments, captivating audiences worldwide with the pinnacle of athletic excellence.
The Professional Squash Association (PSA) have confirmed that World No.1's Ali Farag and Nour El Sherbini will be the top seeds for the forthcoming 12th edition of the El Gouna International Squash Open 2024, scheduled from the 19th to 26th April.
The early rounds of this year's El Gouna International Squash Open will be played at the El Gouna Squash Complex, transitioning to the prestigious El Gouna Conference and Culture Center with the introduction of the all-glass show court from the third round onwards.
Ali Farag, the defending champion, enters the tournament in top form, having reached the final of every PSA Platinum World Tour event this season and securing victory in four out of six of the events. Ali Farag defeated Mostafa Asal in last year's final to seal his fourth consecutive PSA World Tour title, culminating in his reclamation of the World No.1 spot. Eager to continue his winning streak, Ali Farag awaits the winner between Ramit Tandon and Mohamed El Sherbini after earning a first-round bye.
Paul Coll, the World No.2 from New Zealand, stands as the sole player to have beaten Ali Farag this season. With three victories over Ali Farag, Pual Coll embarks on the El Gouna Open with newfound confidence following his recent comeback win at the Optasia Squash Championships and is poised to present a formidable challenge to the title defence aspirations of Ali Farag.
The 2022 El Gouna International Squash Open Champion, Mostafa Asal, enters this year's event as the fourth seed, with his sights set on recapturing the glory he tasted in Hong Kong back in December 2022. Despite a slight adjustment in his playing style, Mostafa Asal remains a force to be reckoned with, particularly on home turf, where he boasts an impressive track record. Positioned to potentially clash with Paul Coll in the semi-finals, Mostafa Asal poses a significant threat to the competition.
Diego Elias, the Peruvian prodigy and third seed, grapples with a title drought since ascending to the World No.1 ranking in April 2023. Despite encountering difficulties against Ali Farag, Elias's undeniable talent fuels his quest for a strong finish to the season, as he sets his sights on the seventh PSA Platinum World Tour event.
In the women's draw, Nour El Sherbini, the undisputed World No.1, headlines the draw, aiming to secure her second El Gouna International Squash Open title and extend her remarkable streak of four consecutive victories. With only two losses throughout the 2023-24 squash season, her dominance looms large as she seeks to further embellish her campaign with another major triumph.
Hania El Hammamy, the 2022 El Gouna International Squash Open Champion and second seed, seeks to add a third PSA World Tour Platinum event title of the season to her repertoire. Positioned alongside defending champion Nouran Gohar, El Hammamy braces for intense battles as she navigates her path towards the coveted title. The clash between these formidable rivals promises to reignite the fiery rivalry witnessed in previous encounters.
Nele Gilis of Belgium, the runner-up in last year's tournament, aims to build on her impressive performance and overcome recent setbacks to mount a formidable challenge. With unwavering determination and resilience, Nele Gilis embarks on her campaign, poised to make her mark once again.
In the women's 5/8 seeds category, a fierce competition ensues among contenders vying for the coveted World No.4 spot. European duo Georgina Kennedy and Tinne Gilis, alongside USA's Olivia Weaver and the ever-dangerous Nour El Tayeb, each possess the capability to spring surprises with their exceptional skills and tenacity on the court.
Egyptian's Moustafa Elsirty and Salma Elalfy have secured wildcard entries for the event, setting the stage for an intriguing clash against Argentina's Leandro Romiglio and Egypt's Mariam Metwally in the opening round. Additionally, qualifying spots remain up for grabs, adding an element of anticipation as the tournament approaches.
