Mostafa Asal has climbed to World No.3 in the latest Men’s World Rankings issued by the Professional Squash Association (PSA).
The rise of two ranking places, follows his impressive run to the final of the 2023 Ace Malaysia Squash Cup last week. The former World No.1, participated in his second event of the season and, though he gave his all, ultimately yielded to Karim Abdel Gawad in the title match. Prior to his runner-up finish, Mostafa Asal secured victories over Ryunosuke Tsukue, Saurav Ghosal and Ramit Tandon.
Mostafa Asal had briefly lost his World No.3 ranking back in mid-October and has reestablished himself ion the top three by surpassing Paul Coll and Mohamed ElShorbagy.
Karim Abdel Gawad, on the other hand, remains steadfast at World No.6, despite his triumph in Malaysia, but he is now within striking distance of the top five players.
Iker Pajares Bernabeu, the Spanish No.1, has earned a well-deserved reward for his recent triumph at the Open International Niort Venise Verte, with his win over fellow UNSQUASHABLE player Rory Stewart propelling him from 21st to 19th in the latest PSA Men’s World Rankings.
Elsewhere, the trio of Egyptian players, Mohamed ElSherbini, Fares Dessouky and Aly Abou Eleinen have all climbed two places to 15th, 16th and 17th positions respectively.
Swiss No.1 Nicolas Mueller has slipping three ranking places to World No.18 whilst Qatar No.1 Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi has seen a dip in his ranking, now standing at World No.20.
Victory at the prestigious Grasshopper Cup 2023, his second PSA World Tour Gold-level event success of 2023 has seen Karim Abdel Gawad propelled him to his highest PSA World Ranking since October 2021
.Often referred to as 'The Baby-Faced Assassin,' Gawad's journey is all the more remarkable considering that he missed the entire first half of the 2022-23 squash season due to a heel injury. Unlike many of his counterparts, this absence means he does not need to defend any points, affording him a unique freedom on the court. His ascent to World No.6 sees him climb above notable competitors such as Marwan ElShorbagy and Mazen Hesham. With this renewed momentum, Karim Abdel Gawad is undoubtedly setting his sights on breaking into the coveted top 5 as the season unfolds.
The ripple effect from the thrilling battles at the Grasshopper Cup 2023 is not limited to Karim Abdel Gawad alone. France's Baptiste Masotti, who showed his mettle by defeating the returning sensation Mostafa Asal in the quarter-finals, has also seen a positive shift in the rankings. Despite eventually succumbing to Welshman Joel Makin, who now stands at World No.9, Baptiste Masotti's resilience has been rewarded with a notable climb of four places. This resurgence places him back at his career-best ranking of World No.14.
England squash player Mohamed ElShorbagy has achieved a remarkable milestone in his career, setting a record for the most consecutive weeks spent inside the top 10 of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Ranking. Mohamed celebrates an astonishing 670 weeks as a top 10 player, surpassing the previous record holder and his current coach Gregory Gaultier of France.
Mohamed ElShorbagy's dominance in the squash world has been nothing short of remarkable, with nearly a decade spent consistently ranked among the top five players in the world. He has also held the prestigious World No.1 ranking for a total of 51 weeks, a testament to his exceptional skills and dedication to the sport. What's more, the Englishman is on the cusp of another milestone, needing just one more victory on the PSA World Tour to claim his 50th PSA World Tour title.
Scotland's Greg Lobban has also made a strong comeback, reclaiming his place inside the top 20 after briefly falling out last week. He has now returned to his highest-ever ranking of World No.19, while Aly Abou Eleinen has experienced a slight dip, dropping two places.
The Professional Squash Association (PSA) have confirmed that Mohamed ElShorbagy of England has achieved a remarkable milestone by matching the record for consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the PSA Men's World Rankings.
Mohamed ElShorbagy has now spent an astonishing 669 weeks inside the world’s top 10, a streak dating back to December 2010 which puts him on par with his coach Gregory Gaultier of France, who also held this distinction for 669 consecutive weeks, from April 2006 to January 2019.
Poised to surpass the record on Monday 9th October when the Professional Squash Association announce their next world rankings, Mohamed ElShorbagy currently maintains his position at World No.3 with the top 20 remaining unchanged.
Egyptian squash player Aly Abou Eleinen has achieved a significant milestone in his career by breaking into the top 20 of the PSA Men's World Rankings for the first time. This remarkable ascent in the rankings can be attributed to the expiration of points earned from the 2022 CIB Egyptian Open, which triggered several movements within the top 20.
Aly Abou Eleinen, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, has seized this opportunity to rise in the rankings, benefiting from Greg Lobban's descent in the standings. Notably, Eleinen's journey to the top 20 commenced from a ranking outside the top 50 just one year ago. His consistent and impressive performance over the past 12 months has propelled him to this remarkable achievement. Eleinen is now set to compete in the upcoming U.S. Squash Open, scheduled for the 7th to 14th October, where he will undoubtedly aim to further solidify his position.
Meanwhile, England's Mohamed ElShorbagy has reclaimed his spot in the top three, following a brief two-week absence from this elite group. His resurgence can be attributed to the revaluation of points, particularly Mostafa Asal's loss of semi-final points from the previous year's CIB Egyptian Open. ElShorbagy is determined to narrow the gap between himself and the top two players, Ali Farag and Diego Elias, as he prepares for his upcoming participation in the U.S. Squash Open next month.
Welshman Joel Makin has also made notable strides in the rankings, reaching the eighth position after an impressive run to the semi-finals of the QTerminals Qatar Squash Classic two weeks ago. This achievement places him just one spot behind his career-high ranking. Conversely, former World Champion Tarek Momen has experienced a decline in his ranking during this period.
Colombian veteran Miguel Rodriguez has embarked on an upward trajectory, ascending to World No.13. The 37-year-old has exchanged positions with Egypt's Fares Dessouky, who now occupies the 14th spot in the rankings.
Scottish No.1 Greg Lobban has claimed a coveted place amongst the world's top 20 players. The achievement marks a career-defining moment for the 31-year-old squash player, as he attains the No.19 spot in the newly unveiled PSA World Rankings.
Previously, Lobban had flirted with the upper echelons of the squash world, having achieved a career-high ranking of World No.21 in both 2020 and 2021. However, his recent rise is underpinned by a remarkable performance at last week’s QTerminals Qatar Squash Classic 2023 in Doha where he defied the odds by advancing to the quarter-finals. Notably, in the third round, Lobban orchestrated a stunning upset, dispatching the No.7 seed, Victor Crouin.
Welsh No.1 Joel Makin, whose remarkable journey a the QTerminals Qatar Squash Classic 2023 saw him reach the semi-finals of the competition where he eventually succumbed to the relentless prowess of World No.1 Ali Farag, has propelled him to the No.9 spot in the latest PSA World Rankings.
Meanwhile, Egypt's Mohamed ElSherbini continues his upward trajectory in the rankings, inching up one more spot to World No.15.
Another compelling storyline within the PSA World Rankings unfolds as Egyptian duo Mohamed Abouelghar and Youssef Ibrahim stage impressive comebacks from injuries. Both players have managed to maintain their fitness throughout the season and given their undeniable skills, are poised to challenge the top 20 ranks. Currently, Mohamed Abouelghar and Youssef Ibrahim stand at No.33 and 34, respectively, eager to make their mark on the squash world.
In this dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of professional squash, Greg Lobban's historic rise to the top 20, Joel Makin's valiant quest for supremacy, and the persistent ascent of Egyptian talents signal an exciting chapter in the sport's history. As these players continue to push the boundaries of excellence, the global squash community eagerly anticipates the next thrilling chapters in their journeys.
