Iker Pajares Bernabeu reaches semi-finals of China Open

Iker Pajares Bernabeu reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Professional Squash Association (PSA) China Squash Open following a succession of stunning performances at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center.
The 4-time Spanish Champion received a bye in the 1st round courtesy of his seventh seeding and opened his campaign with a 50-minute 11-7 11-2 5-11 11-7 win over Simon Herbert of England before claiming a career-first victory over fourth seed Fares Dessouky of Egypt who he overcame 11-9 4-11 11-6 2-11 11-9 in a thrilling 78-minute quarter-final.
In the semi-finals, the Spanish No.1 battled hard against former World No.1 and top seed Mohamed ElShorbagy before eventually being denied 11-7 11-7 7-11 11-3 in 59 minutes.
Also competing in the 2024 China Squash Open, which made its return to the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Squash Tour after a four-year hiatus following the COVID pandemic, was UNSQUASHABLE player Yannick Wilhelmi who lost 7-11 11-6 13-11 3-11 11-9 to Yahya Elnawasany of Egypt in a closely contested 1st round match.
