Yannick Wilhelmi denied in PSA Austrian Open final for 2nd consecutive year
July 09 2022
Yannick Wilhelmi of Switzerland was unable to avenge defeat in last year’s final & was PSA Austrian Open runner-up once again following defeat to James Peach who won this title with a hard-fought 63-minute 4-11 11-9 11-5 10-12 11-7 victory on the all-glass show court situated at the spectacular EUROPARK shopping mall in Salzburg.
Peach, the 25-year-old Englishman, produced a succession of fine performances throughout the tournament to register victories over all three top seeds.
Despite a close match in which both players gave their all & astonished the capacity crowds with their accuracy & athleticism, unfortunately Yannick Wilhelmi was unable to consistently raise his game to the level of his own expectations.
The Swiss top seed won the first game comfortably but couldn’t maintain the rhythm with Peach claiming the next two games. Yannick had a great start in the fourth game but his English opponent continued to make the game difficult with Peach coming back from 4-10 to level the score at 10-10 before Yannick eventually won the game 12-10.
The final game was equally close & exciting with Peach eventually able to take a decisive lead to close-out the deciding game 11-7 to become the new Austrian Open Champion.
Both players showcased their amazing skills & produced a final befitting of the occasion & venue – arguably the best final played in Salzburg on the EUROPARK glass court.
The PSA World Tour event which was staged in Salzburg for the 18th consecutive year proved a mixed event for #teamunsquashable with Iván Pérez of Spain & Elliott Morris Devred of Wales losing in the 1st round.
Congratulations to Austrian No.1 & 16-time Austrian Champion Aqeel Rehman for promoting another great Austrian Open which has been staged at the EUROPARK shopping mall since 2015 & showcases squash no other squash event in Austria!
