May 08 2023

Yannick Wilhelmi of Switzerland claimed the biggest PSA World Tour title of his career to date with victory over France’s Toufik Mekhalfi in the final of the PSA Tour De Las Americas Villa la Angostura Patagonia Squash Open in Argentina.

The Swiss No.3 was seeded No.4 for the first of seven events that make-up this year’s Tour de las Americas played across Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay in May.

In his opening match, the young Swiss defeated Ricardo Toscano of Guatemala 11-8 11-1 11-6 followed by a hard fought 11-6 11-6 11-13 8-11 12-10 quarter-final victory over the experienced Colombian Edgar Ramirez.

The semi-finals, Yannick found himself behind after three games against top seed Spencer Lovejoy of the USA, however the talented Swiss known for his fast and aggressive playing style as well as his ability to quickly adapt to different court surfaces and opponents, fought back to take the fourth game 11-9 to send the match into a deciding fifth game. Despite being ranked 14 places lower than the American, Yannick came through the fifth comfortably to advance to the final, his first on the PSA World Tour since July of last year with an 8-11 11-5 8-11 11-9 11-4.

Yannick will next compete in the second event of the Tour de las Americas series at the PSA Regatas Resistencia Open from the 9th to 13th May.
