England Retain European Team Championship Titles
May 01 2026
England completed a memorable double on a dramatic finals day at the European Squash Team Championships 2026, lifting both the men’s and women’s trophies at the Frans Otten Stadion after two absorbing contests.
The men’s final proved a classic encounter with Switzerland, who came within a single game of claiming the title in their first ever appearance in the European Squash Team Championship final. England, chasing a 46th men’s crown, were pushed to the limit before experience and resilience turned the tie in their favour.
Switzerland struck first through Yannick Wilhelmi, who capped an unbeaten week with an assured 11-9 5-11 11-8 11-7 victory over Patrick Rooney. England responded in style as Marwan ElShorbagy overcame the entertaining Dimitri Steinmann in four high-quality games, sealing the contest with a trademark forehand nick that brought the crowd to life.
The third match saw England debutant Sam Todd demonstrate composure beyond his years. The Englisman was tested by 20-year-old David Bernet, but emerged with an impressive 11-8 6-11 11-9 11-5 victory to edge England ahead.
All eyes then turned to the decisive fourth rubber, where Curtis Malik faced the vastly experienced Nicolas Mueller. When Mueller surged into a two-game lead, Switzerland appeared on the brink of a historic triumph. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the third as Malik increased the pace and began to exploit signs of fatigue. Taking the game 11-7, Malik then secured the crucial points England required before closing out the fourth game 11-8 to spark jubilant celebrations.
Earlier in the day, England’s women had secured their 44th European Squash Team Championship title with victory over France. The tie opened with a compelling duel between Jasmine Hutton and the talented 18-year-old Lauren Baltayan. Hutton raced into a two-game lead, only for Baltayan to mount a spirited recovery, saving match balls in both the third and fourth games to force a decider. Drawing on her experience, Hutton stormed into an early advantage in the fifth and sealed a hard-earned 11-5 11-2 11-13 13-15 11-3 victory.
England No.1 Gina Kennedy then ensured there would be no late drama, delivering a clinical 11-7 11-4 11-5 win over Marie Stephan to confirm the title.
Elsewhere, France secured the men’s bronze medals with a 4-0 win against Germany, while Belgium claimed women’s bronze after defeating Scotland 3-0.
At the other end of the standings, Poland’s men were relegated from Division 1 in their debut season alongside Belgium. In the women’s event, Ukraine and Poland dropped into Division 2 after finishing bottom of the 9-16 play-off group, bringing the curtain down on a compelling week of European team squash in Amsterdam.
