Joel Makin & Nouran Gohar Win 2024-2025 SmartCentres PSA World Tour Squash Finals

Joel Makin and Nouran Gohar were crowned champions at the 2024–25 SmartCentres PSA World Squash Tour Finals, following victories over Mostafa Asal and Olivia Weaver respectively at the Revival Film Studios in Toronto.

World No.4 Joel Makin etched his name into the history books as the first Welsh player ever to win the prestigious season-ending squash event. The 30-year-old was competing in the first major PSA World Squash Tour final of his career and looked in commanding form, taking the opening game and leading 9-6 in the second when Asal suffered a damaging ankle injury.

Following a 15-minute injury break, the Egyptian returned to the court and completed the second game, which Makin won to double his lead. However, after playing just a single point in the third, Asal was forced to concede, bringing an abrupt end to the contest. The result also ended Joel Makin’s nine-match losing streak against the Egyptian and earned him the 10th PSA World Squash Tour title of his career.

World No.1 Nouran Gohar reaffirmed her dominance at the top of the women’s game, securing her fourth PSA World Tour Squash Finals crown with a 61-minute 11-10 9-11 11-8 11-3 victory over World No.4 and USA No.1 Olivia Weaver.

Although Gohar had held a flawless 13-0 record over Weaver heading into the final, the American pushed her all the way in a high-intensity battle. After splitting the opening two games, the American surged to an 8-3 lead in the third, only for Gohar to reel off eight unanswered points in a stunning turnaround.

Buoyed by that momentum shift, the defending champion raced through the fourth game, conceding just three points to clinch the title - her 33rd on the PSA World Squash Tour. The win adds to the Egyptian’s previous triumphs in 2021, 2023 and 2024, making her the only woman in history to win the event four times.

Both Joel Makin and Nouran Gohar pocketed $85,500 in prize money for their title wins. The SmartCentres PSA World Tour Squash Finals marks the conclusion of the 2024–25 PSA squash season, with the new season set to get underway in August.

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) have announced that the prestigious season-ending PSA World Squash Tour Finals will be staged at the Revival Film Studios in Toronto from the 23rd to 27th June 2025.

Hot on the heels of squash’s historic announcement that it will feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, where competition will unfold on the legendary Universal Studios Lot, the choice of Revival Film Studios, formerly Toronto Film Studios, offers a similarly cinematic stage for the world's top players to conclude the 2024-25 squash season.

The SmartCentres PSA World Squash Tour Finals will feature elite men's and women's draws, each comprising eight competitors.

Entry into the prestigious event is secured by winning a coveted PSA Diamond World Tour title during the season, while reigning World Squash Champions also earn automatic qualification. Remaining spots are awarded to the highest-ranked players on the 'Road to Tour Finals' leaderboard, where points are accumulated across all PSA World Squash Tour events throughout the season.

A state-of-the-art, all-glass show court will be constructed inside Revival Film Studios to host the competition. Players will initially compete in a round-robin format, with matches played as best-of-three games. The top two players from each group will then progress to the knockout semi-finals, before the finals revert to the traditional best-of-five format used in most PSA World Squash Tour events.
