Diego Elias & Nouran Gohar crowned 2025 PSA GillenMarkets British Open Squash Champions

Diego Elias of Peru and Egypt’s Nouran Gohar were crowned 2025 GillenMarkets British Open champions at Birmingham’s Repertory Theatre, securing impressive victories over Mostafa Asal and Nour El Sherbini in the men’s and women’s finals respectively.

In the men’s final, World No.2 Elias produced a composed and clinical performance to defeat top seed and defending champion Mostafa Asal, securing his maiden British Open crown and his first major title since the Qatar Squash Classic in October.

Their clash marked another chapter in a growing rivalry intensified by the recent and unexpected retirement of former World No.1 Ali Farag. While their past encounters have often been contentious, this contest was marked by high-quality play and mutual respect.

Diego Elias set the tone early, storming through the opening game 11-4 and edging the second 11-9. Mostafa Asal responded strongly in the third, finding his rhythm to dominate 11-3. However, early in the fourth, the Egyptian suffered a heavy fall and required treatment for a knee injury.

Despite returning to the court to a warm ovation and showing flashes of brilliance, the Egyptianl’s movement was clearly restricted. Elias, sensing vulnerability, kept up the pressure with probing length and intelligent attacks, closing-out the match 11-4 to seal a landmark victory and add one of squash’s most historic titles to his résumé.

In the women’s final, top seed Nouran Gohar came from behind twice to defeat World Champion Nour El Sherbini in a gripping five-game thriller, to capture her third British Open title.

The contest was the 40th professional meeting between the Egyptian duo, who have defined the women's game for over a decade. Nour El Sherbini began confidently, controlling the tempo to take the first game 11-9. Gohar replied with a hard-fought 12-10 second, only for El Sherbini to reassert dominance in the third, winning 11-7.

Drama unfolded in the fourth when, leading 8-7 and just three points from victory, Nour El Sherbini crashed to the floor after diving for a ball, injuring her shoulder. She returned after a medical timeout but was unable to prevent her rival from snatching the game 13-11.

The momentum swung firmly in the World No.1’s favour and although El Sherbini made a strong start in the decider, racing to a 4-1 lead, Gohar responded with ruthless intensity, reeling off ten consecutive points to complete a stunning comeback and reinforce her status at the top of the PSA World Rankings.

The 2025 British Open Squash Championships, the longest-standing tournament on the PSA World Squash Tour, was contested across two venues, Solihull Arden Club and Birmingham Rep Theatre, featuring 96 of the world’s leading players in pursuit of the PSA Diamond-level World Tour event.

UNSQUASHABLE player Miguel Rodríguez produced a remarkable display of grit and resilience, overturning four match balls to edge past England’s Patrick Rooney and book his spot in the last 16 of the 2025 GillenMarkets British Open Squash Championships being staged in Birmingham with an 88-minute 11-5 10-12 11-6 9-11 12-10 victory.

The 39-year-old Colombian appeared dead and buried at 10-6 down in the fifth and final game, but mounted an astonishing comeback to deny his English opponent in a dramatic tiebreak, eventually collapsing to the floor in sheer exhaustion and jubilation.

A former British Open Squash Champion, Rodriguez made a commanding start, taking the opening game 11-5 with his trademark attacking flair. Patrick Rooney, the former World No.18 who had impressed in his first-round win over Mohamed Abouelghar, levelled proceedings by edging a tight second 12-10.

Rodriguez regained control in the third, cruising to an 11-6 win, only for Rooney to claw his way back once again, snatching the fourth 11-9 to force a decider.

The Englishman looked poised for victory after building a 10-6 lead in the fifth, but Rodriguez dug deep, launching himself across the court in a spirited rearguard action. Capitalising on Rooney’s rising tension, he saved all four match balls and surged through the tiebreak to seal a remarkable victory.

As Rodriguez celebrated with arms outstretched on the court, a distraught Rooney vented his frustration by launching a towel box across the floor – a stark contrast to the Colombian's emotional triumph.

“He [Patrick Rooney] is always a tricky player to play against, especially here in England,” said Rodriguez after their titanic battle. “I felt like I was gone during that match, and I nearly gave up in the fourth and the fifth. I had to dig deep, especially in the fifth when he had four match balls and I was thinking that I had nothing to lose, and I just kept going for my shots. Once it got into the tiebreak I had to dig deep again and find my shots and I’m so glad I managed to win in the end.

“It will be another tough one [against Mostafa Asal], but I don’t have anything to lose again. I’m looking forward to it, especially playing on the glass!”
