Sam Gerrits Wins PSA Riga Squash Cup
August 18 2026
UNSQUASHABLE player Sam Gerrits produced an impressive run of performances to capture the 2026 PSA Riga Cup title at Pepsi Centrs, Latvia’s largest squash centre, in Riga.
After receiving a first-round bye, Sam began his campaign in commanding fashion in the quarter-finals, dispatching Adrian Østbye in just 16 minutes. The Dutchman dominated from the opening rally, combining accurate length with relentless pressure to secure a comprehensive 11-9 11-6 11-7 victory.
The semi-finals provided a significantly tougher examination against Mateusz Marcinkowski. Sam surrendered the opening game but responded with authority, adapting his tactics and increasing the intensity of his play to take control of the contest. He won the next three games to complete a 11-4 11-4 11-8 victory in 20 minutes and book his place in the final.
The top-seed faced Mateusz’s brother, Lukasz Marcinkowski, in the final, producing another composed display in a closely fought encounter. The opening game went the Dutchman’s way before Marcinkowski levelled the contest, setting up a tense battle for the title.
With neither player prepared to give ground, the third and fourth games were both decided by the narrowest of margins. Sam maintained his composure when it mattered most to complete an 11-5 7-11 11-7 11-5 victory after 36 minutes.
The triumph in Riga represents another significant achievement for Sam on the PSA World Tour. His ability to recover from an early setback in the semi-finals and then negotiate two tightly contested closing games in the final demonstrated both his tactical maturity and composure under pressure.
Sam leaves the Latvian capital with another PSA title to his name and valuable ranking points, having produced a tournament campaign that combined dominant squash in the early stages with impressive resilience when tested in the latter rounds.
