Jahangir Khan recalls some of the most memorable moments from representing Pakistan in the six World Team Championships

Jahangir Khan is a man whose name is synonymous with squash & is universally recognised as the world’s greatest ever player. Through courage, determination & personal sacrifice, Jahangir Khan overcame personal tragedy to dominate & ultimately transcend the world’s most physically demanding sport. Throughout his record-breaking career, Jahangir Khan used & was synonymous with only one brand: UNSQUASHABLE.

Jahangir Khan remembers the 1993 World Squash Federation (WSF) World Team Championships when Pakistan beat Australia
My final World Team Championships appearance came in 1993 when Pakistan defeated Australia in Karachi.

Pakistan had a very strong team & alongside myself were represented by Jansher Khan, Zarak Jahan Khan & Mir Zaman Gul.

In our pool matches we lost 2-1 to Australia but beat New Zealand 3-0 & Egypt 2-1.

In the semi-finals we beat England 2-1 to face Australia again in an emotionally charged final.

In the final Zarak Jahan Khan beat Rodney Eyles 9-4 9-2 6-9 2-9 10-9 & Jansher Khan beat Rodney Martin 9-2 9-0 9-0 after I’d beaten Brett Martin 6-9 9-1 9-5 9-3.

Australian Chris Robertson was a fierce competitor & a key member of the Australian team that beat Pakistan in the 1989 final.

Pakistan had a very strong team & alongside myself were represented by Jansher Khan, Umar Hayat Khan & Zarak Jahan Khan.

In our pool matches we beat New Zealand, Sweden, Canada, Scotland & France. In the quarter-finals & semi-finals we continued our fine form with wins over Egypt & England respectively.

However, Australia brought our winning run to an end with Chris Robertson defeating Zarak Jahan Khan 3-9 10-9 9-2 9-2, Rodney Martin beating Jansher Khan 9-10 9-3 9-6 9-1 & I lost to Chris Dittmar 9-6 5-9 3-9 0-9.

The 1987 Men’s World Team Championships were sponsored by ICI Perspex & held in London.

Alongside myself, Pakistan were represented by Jansher Khan, Umar Hayat Khan & Qamar Zaman.

We won all of our pool matches 3-0 against Sweden, West Germany, Norway, Greece & Malaysia & beat Singapore (3-0) & Australia (2-1) in the quarter-finals & semi-finals respectively.

In the final, staged at the spectacular Royal Albert Hall we beat New Zealand 3-0. Umar Hayat Khan beat Stephen Cunningham 9-5 9-2 9-2, Jansher Khan beat Ross Norman 2-9 9-0 8-10 9-0 9-6 & I beat Stuart Davenport 9-5 9-1 9-0.

The Royal Albert Hall was a truly spectacular venue for squash!!

Jahangir Khan remembers the 1985 World Squash Federation (WSF) World Team Championships when Pakistan beat New Zealand
The 1985 Men's World Team Squash Championships were held in Cairo & Pakistan successfully defended the title with a new team with Qamar Zaman & Maqsood Ahmed replaced by the up-and-coming Sohail Qaiser & Umar Hayat Khan.

In our opening pool matches, we beat West Germany, Sweden, Scotland & Spain, before progressing to the final with wins over Egypt, Australia & Singapore.

In the final in Cairo, we beat New Zealand 2-1. Umar Hayat Khan lost to Stuart Davenport 0-9, 4-9, 9-7 2-9, Sohail Qaiser beat Paul Viggers 9-4 9-2 9-6 & I beat my great rival Ross Norman 9-1 9-3 9-2!

Jahangir Khan remembers the 1983 World Squash Federation (WSF) World Team Championships when Pakistan beat England
The 1983 Men's World Team Squash Championships were staged in Auckland & Hamilton in New Zealand.

Pakistan successfully defended the title with the same team as two years previous – represented by myself, Qamar Zaman & Maqsood Ahmed.

We beat New Zealand as well as Canada, Singapore & Scotland in our group matches before beating the United States, Australia & New Zealand in our final pool matches.

In the final which was staged in Auckland, we beat England 3-0. Maqsood Ahmed beat Phil Kenyon 9-2 9-1 9-4, Qamar Zaman 9-3 10-8 1-9 9-3 & I beat Hiddy Jahan 9-3 9-3 9-7.

Jahangir Khan remembers helping Pakistan beat Australia in the 1981 World Squash Federation (WSF) World Team Championships
I was fortunate to play in six WSF Men’s World Team Championships & still fondly remember my first championships in 1981 which was staged in Sweden & which Pakistan won.

We had a strong team. Maqsood Ahmed & Qamar Zaman were my teammates & we safely progressed through all of our group matches against the United States, Canada & Singapore before moving to Stockholm for our final pool matches where we beat Egypt, Scotland & hosts Sweden.

In the final, also in Stockholm, we beat Australia 3-0 with Maqsood Ahmed beating Greg Pollard & Qamar Zaman beating Glen Brumby in five games, whilst I beat Steve Bowditch.

Jahangir Khan used UNSQUASHABLE rackets throughout his record breaking career.
