James Willstrop denied Commonwealth Games Bronze Medal by Saurav Ghosal

August 04 2022

Despite another huge effort from six-time Commonwealth Games Medallist James Willstrop, the defending men’s champion was denied a seventh by his close friend Saurav Ghosal of India.

The victory represented an historic accomplishment with Saurav Ghosal becoming the first Indian to win a singles medal.

Feeling the effects from his previous matches clearly, Ghosal played a brilliant game and constantly nullified James’ threat with clever combinations of drop shots & lobs to close-out an impressive 11-6 11-1 11-4.

"It was frustrating and difficult, and it’s just a bit disappointing when you have an amazing crowd like that,” said James Willstrop. “But I’m really pleased for Saurav, huge congrats to him. We’re very close as we train together so I’m just really happy for him.
