Miguel Rodriguez Wins 2026 STARR Bermuda Open
April 19 2026
UNSQUASHABLE player Miguel Rodriguez completed a superb run at the 2026 STARR Bermuda Squash Open by overturning top seed Kareem El Torkey in a gripping five-game final, capping a week in which the Colombian navigated a series of contrasting challenges with authority. After edging a brutal 74-minute semi-final against Leandro Romiglio, producing a clinical straight-games quarter-final display to dismiss Salman Khalil, and managing a tactically demanding opening match against Dewald van Niekerk, Miguel returned to the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association National Squash Centre twelve months after finishing runner-up to go one step further and claim his 31st career title on the PSA World Squash Tour.
The event proved a showcase for Miguel's enduring class, tactical intelligence and competitive resilience across four demanding matches.
In the final, Miguel overcame top seed Kareem El Torkey 11-5 7-11 9-11 11-5 11-7 in a high-quality 70-minute contest that tested every facet of his game.
After making a commanding start to take the opening game, the Colombian found himself under sustained pressure as El Torkey settled into his length and claimed the next two games. With the momentum against him, Miguel relied on experience and subtle tactical adjustments, varying height, pace and angles, to break the Egyptian’s rhythm. He controlled the fourth game with authority before producing a composed and clinical decider, mixing deft short work with precise length to secure the title.
A semi-final against Argentine No.1 Leandro Romiglio proved to be one of the most physically and mentally demanding encounters of the week, in which he eventually prevailed 11-8 11-7 16-14 in a gripping 74-minute battle that hinged on patience and nerve.
Having established a two-game lead through accurate length and control of the central court area, Miguel was drawn into a prolonged third game as Romiglio raised the intensity and extended rallies deep into the tie-break. The Colombian’s composure in the decisive moments, saving and converting match balls under pressure, ultimately secured his place in a second consecutive Bermuda final.
A statement performance in the quarter-finals, saw Miguel produce one of the most emphatic displays of the tournament, dispatching Egypt’s Salman Khalil 11-4 11-5 11-5 in just 36 minutes. Dominating the T from the outset, he denied his opponent time on the ball and punished anything loose with clinical precision. It was a performance that underlined his title credentials and preserved valuable physical reserves for the later rounds.
Miguel's opening match against South Africa’s Dewald van Niekerk required greater tactical patience than the scoreline suggested as he secured an 11-3 11-9 11-8 victory in 55 minutes, absorbing periods of sustained pressure in the latter stages of the match before using his experience to close out the key moments without allowing momentum to shift.
Across the tournament, Miguel demonstrated the full spectrum of his game - attacking flair, positional discipline, tactical maturity and emotional control. Each round posed a different challenge, and in each instance he adapted intelligently to the demands of the contest.
Twelve months after leaving Devonshire with the runner-up trophy, Miguel Rodríguez returned to the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association National Squash Centre with unfinished business. By overcoming the top seed in the final and navigating a series of contrasting challenges throughout the week, the Colombian reinforced his reputation as one of the most skilful, entertaining and resilient competitors on the PSA World Tour while adding another significant title to his distinguished career.
