April 10 2024

Mostafa Asal and Nouran Gohar were crowned champions at the 2024 Black Ball Squash Open following wins over Ali Farag and Olivia Weaver respectively at the Black Ball Sporting Club in Cairo.

Mostafa Asal emerged triumphant in the men’s final of the 2024 Black Ball Squash Open with a thrilling four-game battle against the reigning World No.1 Ali Farag.

The top seeded Farag set the tone early in the match, exhibiting his astute understanding of Mostafa Asal's game and methodically manoeuvring his way to seemingly claim the first game. However, despite holding three game balls and appearing poised to seize control, Ali Farag faltered as Mostafa Asal, known as 'The Raging Bull', mounted a remarkable comeback, securing five consecutive points to snatch the opener.

Empowered by his first-game conquest, Mostafa elevated his performance in the second, displaying remarkable composure in his shot selection and capitalising on his short game proficiency. Surprisingly, it was Asal who asserted dominance at the T, with Ali Farag appearing somewhat subdued as the match progressed. The disparity in winners, with Mostafa Asal amassing 14 compared to Ali Farag's mere three, underscored the second seed’s growing authority on the court.

Ali Farag, undeterred, staged a spirited resurgence in the third game, slowing down the tempo of rallies and subjecting Mostafa Asal to gruelling exchanges. Despite Asal's valiant efforts to claw back from a 7-4 deficit and narrow the gap to a single point at 7-8, Ali Farag, a four-time World Champion, managed to secure the game, narrowing the overall deficit to 2-1.

As the intensity heightened in the fourth game, so too did the contentiousness, with both players grappling for supremacy amidst increased interference. However, it was Asal who began to assert his authority, capitalising on loose cross-courts from his rival with authoritative straight drive winners. With the match hanging in the balance, Asal surged to a 10-8 advantage, ultimately sealing victory when an Ali Farag forehand found the tin from mid-court, thus crowning Asal as the champion after an enthralling 56-minute spectacle.

In the women's final, Nouran Gohar clinched her third consecutive Black Ball Squash Open title with a commanding 11-7 11-5 11-7 victory over second-seeded Olivia Weaver.

The culmination of the women’s championships at the prestigious PSA World Tour Gold event in Cairo at the spectacular Black Ball Sporting Club witnessed a formidable display from the defending champion, dubbed 'The Terminator'.

Showing her trademark aggression and precision from the outset, Nouran Gohar swiftly established her dominance, unleashing a barrage of powerful shots that kept Olivia Weaver constantly on the defensive. From the outset, Noura Gohar seized control of the court, amassing a commanding 7-1 lead in the opening game, leaving her American rival with little room for recovery.

Persisting with her onslaught, Nouran Gohar maintained unyielding pressure, capitalising on Weaver's errors and strategically manoeuvring her opponent to all four corners of the all-glass show court.. Employing her deceptive boasts, Nouran Gohar further tightened her grip on the match, confounding Weaver's movement and bolstering her lead.

The defending champion continued her dominance to effortlessly claim the second game 11-5 and buoyed by her momentum, swiftly surged ahead in the third game, leaving little doubt as to the eventual outcome.

Ultimately, Nouran Gohar sealed her victory with a decisive backhand kill, which ensured her successful title defence in the most empathic style.

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour travels to Egypt for the first time in the 2023-24 squash season, with the PSA Black Ball Squash Open returning to the calendar featuring 48 players who will compete at the Black Ball Sporting Club.

In the men's draw, World No.1 Ali Farag, who has previously contesting the title five times without success, will be confident of his chances this year. His dominant season, punctuated by only a single defeat to New Zealand's Paul Coll, who is absent from this year’s PSA Black Ball Squash Open, puts him in prime position to claim a seventh title in 2024.

Mostafa Asal, the "Raging Bull," steps up as the men's number two seed. Fresh off a runner-up finish at the London Squash Classic, Mostafa Asal, who already clinched the Florida Squash Open in January, will be hungry to end the season strongly and reclaim a spot in the world's top three.

The men's draw also boasts threats like Karim Abdel Gawad, Mazen Hesham, and last year's finalist Tarek Momen.

In the women's draw, defending champion Nouran Gohar seeks to retain her crown and secure her first title of the 2023-24 squash season which has been hampered by injury. Nicknamed "The Terminator," Noran Gohar benefits from the absence of both the World No.1 Nour ElSherbini and World No.3 Hania El Hammamy, presenting her with a golden opportunity.

The women's draw also sees Olivia Weaver of the USA take the mantle of second seed, her highest ever in a PSA World Tour Gold event. Olivier Weaver hasn't competed internationally since the Hong Kong Squash Open in December, but she arrives in Egypt determined to make a mark and potentially claim the biggest title of her career.

However, Nouran Gohar and Olivier Weaver will face a gauntlet of challengers, including Nour El Tayeb, Tinne Gilis, and Rowan Elaraby.

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) have announced the draws for the Black Ball Squash Open 2024 to be staged at the Black Ball Sporting Club in Cairo, Egypt from the 11th to 16th April.

World No.1 Ali Farag has been confirmed as the men’s top seed with defending women’s champion Nouran Gohar confirmed as the top seed of the women’s draw of the prestigious PSA World Tour Gold event.

Despite being a three-time finalist at the Black Ball Sporting Club, Ali Farag remains determined to clinch one of the few PSA World Tour Gold titles to have eluded him thus far. The reigning Men’s World Squash Champion, pursuing his seventh PSA World Tour title of the 2023-24 squash season, will play the winner of Curtis Malik and Omar Mosaad in his opening match.

Mostafa Asal, dubbed 'The Raging Bull', is the second seed and will be seeking his second major PSA World Tour title of the year after securing victory at the Florida Squash Open in January. Mostafa Asal, presently ranked World No.4, will play the winner of Auguste Dussourd or Karim El Hammamy in his opening match.

Should the seedings unfold as projected, Mostafa Asal is poised to clash with the No.3 seed, Karim Abdel Gawad, in the semi-finals. The duo previously squared off in the final of the Ace Malaysia Squash Cup, with Karim Abdel Gawad emerging victorious and eager to secure his fourth PSA World Tour title of the season.

Egypt's Mazen Hesham, enjoying a hugely successful season highlighted by victories over Diego Elias and Mohamed Elshorbagy, ascends to his career-best ranking of World No.6. The ‘Black Falcon' is seeded to meet Ali Farag in the semi-finals, reminiscent of their recent Windy City Squash Open clash where Ali Farag triumphed in five gruelling games. Mazen Hesham will open his campaign against either Nicolas Mueller or wildcard entrant Aly Ezzat.

Nouran Gohar, the top seed in the women's draw, aims to retain her title from 2023 and seize her inaugural PSA World Tour win of the 2023-24 squash season. Despite enduring a setback earlier in the season due to a plantar fascia injury sidelining her for four months, the resilient World No.3 showed remarkable resilience by reaching the final stages of both the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions and the Windy City Squash Open. Nouran Gohar will commence her tournament journey following a round one bye, awaiting the winner between Emilia Soini and Fayrouz Aboelkheier.

Meanwhile, USA's Olivia Weaver secures the No.2 seed, propelled by an exceptional season marked by two domestic victories and a semi-final finish at the U.S Squash Open in October. The 28-year-old, yet to surpass the semi-final stage at a PSA World Tour Gold event, harbours a fervent desire to break into the world’s top five.

Nour El Tayeb, the No.3 seed, shares the top half of the draw's with top seed Nouran Gohar. Nour El Tayeb, buoyed by her recent triumph in Cleveland, seeks to spring an upset enroute to the final, eyeing her fourth PSA World Tour title of the 2023-24 squash season. In her opening match, Nour El Tayeb must navigate past the challenge posed by either Zeina Mickawy or Alicia Mead.

Nouran Gohar and Mohamed ElShorbagy were crowned 2023 PSA Black Ball Squash Open champions
