Lwamba Chileshe wins maiden New Zealand National Championship
July 09 2024
Lwamba Chileshe and brother Temwa ensured it was an all-UNSQUASHABLE men’s final at the 2024 New Zealand National Squash Championships staged at the Devoy Squash and Fitness Centre in Tauranga with the top seed Lwamba eventually triumphing 17-15 11-7 11-8 to claim his maiden national title.
The older brother took the honours in a tightly contested final in which both started at a high tempo with the opening game taking 32 points to be settled before Lwamba was eventually able to close-out 17-15 after Temwa was unable to convert five game balls. The top seed took confidence from the initial advantage and maintained greater consistency to eventually win the final in straight games.
“It was a bittersweet victory for me today as I always want the best for my brother and it’s always hard playing him as we both know each other’s games inside and out,” said the newly crowned New Zealand National Squash Champion.
“I am very stoked to have won my first ever national title as I don’t know if I’ll ever get my name on this trophy again! Shout-out to Paul Coll who is New Zealand number one and decided to have his wedding at the same time as nationals to give the rest of us a shot at this title!”
Both brothers showed impressive form throughout the championships with Temwa Chileshe claiming victories over Riley Noonan, Allan Bailey, Ben Grindrod third seed Elijah Thomas enroute to the final.
Lwamba Chileshe was in equally imperious form with wins over Richard Van Rynbach, Glenn Templeton, Joseph Williams and fourth seed Joel Arscott.
