June 23 2024

Yuri Farneti registered a series of impressive wins to reach the final of 2024 Gibraltar Squash Open staged at the Europa Sports Centre.

The Italian No.1 and 9-time Italian National Champion dropped just two games in reaching the final in which he was eventually denied by top seed and former World No.22 Moustafa El Sirty of Egypt 12-10 10-12 11-9 11-7 in 58 minutes.

Yuri Farneti defeated Nathan Mead of England 11-5 11-3 11-3 in his opening match, followed by a 56-minute 11-3 11-4 8-11 11-5 victory over 2nd seed Robert Downer in the 2nd round, 42-minute 5-11 11-8 11-3 11-4 quarter-final win over fifth seed Jose Gallegos of Chile and a 40 minute 11-6 11-3 11-3 semi-final triumph over David Maier of Liechtenstein.

In the final, Yuri Farneti took the opening game and had his higher ranked Egyptian opponent worried in the 2nd game before the top seed claimed the second game in a close-contested tiebreak.

Moustafa Elsirty edged the third game 11-9 but the Italian No.1 continued to fight hard and threatening to force a decider at 6-3 up in the fourth, before the Egyptian managed to win seven of the next eight points to bring up three match balls to eventually clinch victory.
