The Professional Squash Association (PSA) have released the draws for the 2025 Comcast Business U.S. Open Squash Championships confirming World No.1s Mostafa Asal and Nouran Gohar as the top seeds for the 52nd staging of one of the world's most prestigious squash tournaments which will be held in Philadelphia from the 19th to 25th October.
Staged at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center, the iconic tournament will feature 64 of the world’s best male and female players with a record-breaking $452,000 prize fund.
For the first time, the semi-finals and finals will be broadcast live on Peacock in the United States, complementing global coverage on SQUASHTV and through PSA’s international broadcast partners.
Mostafa Asal begins his pursuit of a second U.S. Open title after the Egyptian made history in 2021 as the tournament’s youngest-ever men’s champion, overturning a two-game deficit to defeat Tarek Momen in a classic final.
Asal could renew rivalries with Mohamed ElShorbagy in the quarter-finals, and potentially Joel Makin in the semi-finals. Makin, the No.4 seed, captured his first major title last season by defeating Asal in the PSA World Squash Tour Finals, avenging his British Squash Open semi-final loss. The Welshman now sits within striking distance of World No.3 Paul Coll in the rankings and will aim to build on his finest campaign to date.
In the bottom half, World No.2 Diego Elias and World No.4 Paul Coll are both chasing their second U.S. Squash Open crowns. Elias, the reigning World Squash Champion, could face either English prospect Jonah Bryant or former World No.5 Mazen Hesham in the second round, with Marwan ElShorbagy or Aly Abou Eleinen likely to await later in the draw.
Former World Squash Champions Karim Abdel Gawad and Mohamed ElShorbagy bring added experience as the No.6 and No.7 seeds, while Egypt’s Youssef Soliman rounds out the top eight.
Women’s World No.1 Nouran Gohar enters as top seed and a four-time U.S. Squash Open champion. The Egyptian star, nicknamed “The Terminator”, dominated the PSA World Squash Tour last season, winning five major titles, including a thrilling victory over compatriot Nour El Sherbini in last year’s final.
Gohar shares her quarter with Japan’s Satomi Watanabe (No.6 seed) and sits in the same half of the draw as U.S. No.1 Olivia Weaver, the fourth seed.
Weaver, ranked a career-high World No.4, continues to close the gap on the Egyptian trio who dominate the women’s game. The Philadelphia-born 29-year-old made history last season as the first American to reach three U.S. Squash Open semi-finals in the Platinum era, before falling to El Sherbini in a five-game thriller.
Second seed Nour El Sherbini heads the bottom half of the draw but faces an early test against Amanda Sobhy, the American World No.10 and 22-time PSA World Squash Tour title winner, in one of the standout opening-round clashes.
World No.3 Hania El Hammamy also finds herself in the same half, beginning her campaign against Belgium’s former World No.4 Nele Gilis. El Hammamy is seeded to meet four-time World Junior Champion Amina Orfi in a potential blockbuster quarter-final.
With Orfi, Watanabe, Tinne Gilis, and Sivasangari Subramaniam all among the 5/8 seeds, the women’s draw promises depth and danger from every corner. Orfi, in particular, has proven capable of taking down the very best, reaching the 2024 El Gouna International final with wins over both El Sherbini and Weaver.
American wildcards Alexander Dartnell, Salim Khan, Sabrina Sobhy, and Lucie Stefanoni will look to make their mark and give the home fans plenty to cheer at the Specter Center.
With both draws stacked with world-class talent, the 2025 U.S. Squash Open promises another week of top-tier squash, history, and drama in Philadelphia.
