Jonah Bryant & Amelie Haworth crowned 2024 European Individual U19 Squash Champions

England's Jonah Bryant and Amelie Haworth secured gold medals in a thrilling culmination at the ESF European Individual U19 Squash Championships held in Bucharest, Romania.

In the men’s final, top seed and defending champion Jonah Bryant demonstrated his resilience against France’s Melvil Scianimanico, becoming the first Englishman to clinch consecutive European junior squash titles. Jonah Bryant, the English Junior U19 Squash Champion, showed impeccable form throughout the tournament.

Despite a tough challenge from Melvil Scianimanico of France in the final, Jonah Bryant seized control early on, claiming the first game 11-9. Melvil Scianimanico fought back strongly, levelling the match by winning the second game 13-11. The Frenchman then surged ahead with an 11-8 victory in the third game. However, Jonah Bryant launched a counterattack in the fourth game, clinching it 13-11 in a tiebreak. The final game saw Jonah Bryant exert relentless pressure which eventually wore down his opponent as the young Englishman eventually closed-out a 74-minute victory 11-7 11-13 8-11 13-11 11-4.

In the women’s final, No.2 seed Amelie Haworth, hailing from the Isle of Wight, staged a remarkable comeback against French No.1 seed Lauren Baltayan. Despite losing the first two games, the reigning English Junior U19 Squash Champion fought back to dominate the third game, overwhelming Lauren Baltayan with precise attacking shots to secure 10 consecutive points and claim the game 11-2.

Lauren Baltayan rallied in the fourth game, earning four championship balls at 10-6. However, Amelie Haworth defended each championship ball admirably to force a tiebreak. Amelie Haworth saved two more championship balls before clinching the game 17-15 to force a fifth and final game. The decisive fifth game remained closely contested, but it was Amelie Haworth who ultimately prevailed to secure a 52-minute 8-11 8-11 11-3 17-15 11-7 victory.

Earlier in the day, [7/8] seed Abdallah Eissa emerged victorious in an all-English battle against [3/4] seed Yusuf Sheikh, winning the men’s third-place playoff 5-11 11-9 11-4 11-4.

France defeated England in the final of the ESF European Under-19 Mixed Team Squash Championships in Bucharest, Romania, following a captivating final showdown against England.

The final match held at the Aerosquash Baneasa witnessed an intense battle between the undefeated top seed England and the second seed France, both teams having triumphed over Switzerland and Czech Republic in their respective semi-final clashes.

The opening encounter between Lauren Baltayan of France and Amelie Haworth of England mirrored the women’s U19 individual final, featuring a thrilling five-game duel between Europe’s two leading junior female players with Lauren Baltayan eventually prevailing 11-6 11-6 11-13 8-11 11-7.

Jonah Bryant of England, the recently crowned individual European junior squash champion, delivered an outstanding performance in the subsequent match against French counterpart Melvil Scianimanico, winning 11-5 11-8 11-1 to level the tie for England.

In the deciding match, Amir Khaled-Jousselin earned victory for France with an 11-9 12-10 11-5 win over Abd-Allah Eissa, who secured third place in the U19 individual event.
