Timothy Brownell Wins 2025 PSA Charlottesville Squash Open

USA No.1 Timothy Brownell captured the biggest title of his PSA World Squash Tour career after overcoming Egypt’s Salman Khalil in the final of the 2025 Charlottesville Squash Open at the Boar’s Head Resort in Virginia, USA.

The 28-year-old top seed capped a strong week of squash with a composed and assured display, claiming his fourth PSA World Squash Tour title and his first since October 2022.

Timothy Brownell had battled through a testing route to the final, which included a demanding semi-final victory over Pakistan’s rising star Noor Zaman. Less than 24 hours later, he faced another emerging talent in Salman Khalil, and the American used all of his experience and control to prevail 11-6 10-12 11-9 11–3 in 59 minutes.

With the home crowd firmly behind him, the American started confidently, taking the opening game 11-6 with a series of deft touches and well-timed attacks that kept the Egyptian chasing. He looked poised to extend his lead when he went 10-6 up in the second, but Khalil responded superbly, reeling off six consecutive points to steal the game and level the match.

The third proved pivotal, as Brownell held his nerve in the closing exchanges to edge it 11
-9, drawing a huge roar from the crowd as he turned to celebrate. With momentum restored, the top seed dominated the fourth game, racing into an 8-2 advantage as Khalil’s resistance began to fade.

There was no way back for the Egyptian as Brownell pressed home his advantage, sealing victory on his first championship ball with a clinical forehand winner into the nick - a fitting finish to the finest triumph of his career so far.

The win not only reaffirms Brownell’s position as the leading force in American men’s squash but also signals his growing presence on the international stage as he looks ahead to the remainder of the PSA season with renewed confidence.

It was a day of contrasting fortunes for UNSQUASHABLE players Ronald Palomino and Nick Wall at the 2025 Charlottesville Squash Open, with both bowing out of the competition at the Boar’s Head Resort in Virginia.

Ronald Palomino of Colombia battled hard against Argentine No.1 and sixth seed Leandro Romiglio but was denied in a fiercely contested four-game encounter. After splitting the opening two games, the Colombian came agonisingly close to taking a crucial lead, only for Romiglio to edge a tense third 14-12. That proved decisive, as the Argentine pressed home his advantage in the fourth to complete an 11-8, 5-11, 14-12, 11-4 victory after 58 minutes.

An under-par Nick Wall, suffering the effects of a recent virus, was halted in straight games by fellow Englishman Sam Todd.

UNSQUASHABLE ambassador Ronald Palomino produced a commanding display to sweep past Egypt’s Abdelrahman Nassar in straight games at the 2025 Charlottesville Squash Open, staged at the Boar’s Head Resort in Virginia, USA.

Ronald dictated the tempo from the outset, combining sharp movement with clinical finishing to claim an 11-5 opening game. The Colombian tightened his grip in the second, allowing Nassar little room to settle as he surged to an emphatic 11-2 win. With confidence flowing, Ronald closed out the contest 11-6 in the third to seal victory in just 26 minutes.

The straight-games triumph not only underlines Ronald’s growing presence on the PSA World Squash Tour but also highlights the consistency and attacking flair that have become hallmarks of his game. On current form, the Colombian looks well equipped to mount a strong run in Virginia.

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) have confirmed the draw for the 2025 Charlottesville Squash Open which will be staged at the Boar’s Head Resort in Virginia, USA for the third successive year.

Last year’s event marked a milestone for the city, stepping up from Challenger status to the PSA’s newly introduced Copper level. It proved a memorable debut, as Pakistan’s unseeded Muhammad Asim Khan produced a string of upsets to claim the biggest PSA World Squash Tour title of his career.

The Pakistan No.1 will be back to defend his crown, though once again unseeded and with a demanding route ahead. He begins against tournament wildcard JP Tew, the three-time US Junior National Squash Champion (U11, U13, U15) who will make his PSA World Squash Tour debut on home soil. Awaiting the winner is top seed and USA No.1 Timothy Brownell, fresh from victory at the Silicon Valley Squash Open.

JP Tew enters with the advantage of familiarity, having represented the University of Virginia for the past three seasons. He is joined by UVA teammate Juan Torres, who has been awarded the second wildcard. The Colombian has enjoyed a breakthrough summer, lifting three PSA Challenger titles in succession to rise to a career-high World No.104. 0Torres will open against American No.2 Shahjahan Khan, with the winner progressing to meet 2023 champion and last year’s runner-up Nick Wall in round two.

Nick Wall, seeded third this year, could be on course for a semi-final clash with fellow Englishman Nathan Lake, the No.2 seed. A repeat of the 2023 final, which Nick Wall won in four games, after also ousting top seed Leonel Cardenas, would see the two left-handers renew their rivalry. Both, however, face stern challenges in the early rounds: Nathan Lake could encounter either Sam Todd or Salah Eltorgman in round two, while Nick Wall shares his quarter with Pakistan’s rising star Noor Zaman.

Noor Zaman, the reigning U23 World Squash Champion and a nominee for PSA Men’s Young Player of the Year, has been handed a testing opener against Egypt’s Salman Khalil, the reigning US college individual champion who is one of two University of Pennsylvania standouts in the draw, joined by compatriot Omar Said. The pair have been prolific in recent months, amassing six PSA Challenger titles between them since April.
