Defending champions Ali Farag and Nour El Sherbini started their respective title defences at the 2023-24 CIB PSA World Squash Championships with contrasting victories over Todd Harrity and Jessica Turnbull at the Palm Hills Club in Cairo, Egypt.

Whilst women’s top seed Nour ElSherbini defeated Jessica Turnbull of Australia 11-0 11-4 11-4 in just 19 minutes, men’s top seed Ali Farag was forced to come from behind to overcome UNSQUASHABLE player Todd Harrity 8-11 11-3 11-1 11-5 in 38 minutes.

Ali Farag, the reigning World No. 1, started his campaign to defend his title at the 2023-24 CIB PSA World Squash Championships with a hard-fought victory over Todd Harrity of the United States. Despite an initial setback, Ali Farag showed his resilience as he rallied back from a game down to clinch the match.

The encounter kicked off with Todd Harrity dictating proceedings, swiftly establishing a commanding 6-0 lead in the first game. Ali Farag, familiar with Todd Harrity from their collegiate squash encounters in the USA, mounted a late surge but was unable to wrest control, conceding the opening game 8-11.

However, Ali Farag swiftly shifted gears in the subsequent games, asserting his dominance particularly in the front of the court. He squared the match by convincingly claiming the second game, losing only three points. In the third game, Ali Farag surged ahead, capitalising on a formidable 9-0 lead to seize control of the match.

Although Todd Harrity exhibited resilience in the early stages of the fourth game, Ali Farag demonstrated his championship pedigree, ultimately securing an 8-11 11-3 11-1 11-5 victory that sets up an intriguing second-round clash against Scotland's Greg Lobban.

Should Al Farag triumph in Cairo, he will surpass the illustrious Amr Shabana, cementing his status as one of the most decorated players in PSA World Championship history with five titles to his name.

UNSQUASHABLE player Spanish No.1 Iker Pajares Bernabeu defeated Tom Walsh of England 11-5 12-10 11-7 in 56 minutes to progress to the 2nd round of the CIB PSA World Squash Championships in Cairo, whilst Rory Stewart of Scotland overcame fellow UNSQUASHABLE player Yannick Wilhelmi 11-7 11-4 11-6 in their 1st round match.

The CIB PSA World Squash Championships starts today and whilst the sport’s most prestigious squash titles will feature 126 contenders.

The likely men’s world champion is expected to come from an elite group of squash players including Ali Farag, Paul Coll, Mostafa Asal, Diego Elias and Karim Abdel Gawad, whilst favourites for the women’s world championship title are Nour El Sherbini, Nouran Gohar, Hania El Hammamy and Nele Gilis.

Ali Farag has firmly established himself as a dominant force in the sport, mirroring the achievements of fellow Egyptian Nour ElSherbini. Over the past few years, Ali Farag has etched his name into the annals of squash history, clinching the prestigious World Squash Championships crown an impressive three consecutive times. With this feat, he now shares the illustrious company of Egyptian legend Amr Shabana, each boasting four world squash Championship titles to their name.

Ali Farag's recent performances have been nothing short of remarkable, exemplified by his remarkable 26-match winning streak at the championships. Eager to further solidify his legacy, the World No.1 sets his sights on extending this streak to 32 matches, a feat that would propel him into sole possession of third place in the esteemed all-time men's world squash champions list.

Astonishingly, Ali Farag has reached the final in an astounding 16 of his last 17 PSA World Tour events, a testament to his unparalleled skill and determination on the court, and stands poised to etch another chapter in his storied career, reaffirming his status as one of the sport's most formidable competitors.

With five PSA World Tour titles, including two PSA Platinum titles and two PSA Gold titles, New Zealand's Paul Coll is one of only two players to have overcome Ali Farag this season, securing victories in the U.S. Squash Open, Hong Kong Squash Open and Optasia Squash Championships.

Paul Coll attributes his resurgence to his collaboration with Australian squash legend and former World Champion Rodney Martin. The World No.2 acknowledges the profound impact of this partnership, revitalising his game and igniting fresh motivation within him. With the seasoned guidance of a former World Champion in his corner, Paul Coll sets his sights on fulfilling a lifelong ambition – clinching the coveted title himself. Paul Coll carries with him the determination to turn his childhood dream into reality, propelled by the expertise and support of his esteemed mentor.

Mostafa Asal, last year's top seed, faced defeat in the semi-final stage of the 2023 PSA World Squash Championships, succumbing to eventual champion Ali Farag in four intense games. Despite this setback, the 22-year-old enters the 2024 CIB PSA World Squash Championships as a formidable 3/4 seed.

While he experienced a somewhat lacklustre start to the 2023-2024 squash season, Mostafa Asal has since rediscovered his form at a crucial juncture. Impressively, he has advanced to the final in his last three PSA World Tour appearances, narrowly missing victory against Paul Coll at the London Squash Classic and Ali Farag at the El Gouna Squash International, with a notable triumph over the World No.1 at the Black Ball Squash Open in between.

The collaboration between Mostafa Asala with former World No.1 and UNSQUASHABLE ambassador James Willstrop appears to have yielded promising results. Embracing a more composed and calculated approach, Mostafa Asal transforms into a potent force on the court, presenting a formidable challenge to his opponents. With his home World Squash Championships, Asal Mostafa has emerged as a compelling contender, poised to make a significant impact with his refined strategy and unwavering determination.

Diego Elias, known as the 'Peruvian Puma', has faced a challenging 2023-2024 squash season marked by frustration. Despite clinching two PSA World Tour Silver level event titles, his campaign has been marred by disappointment, with four finals slipping from his grasp, all at the hands of World No.1 Ali Farag. This time last year, Diego Elias soared to the summit of the rankings, attaining the coveted title of World No.1. However, since relinquishing that position in June, he has struggled to reclaim his former glory.

Eager to stage a comeback, the 27-year-old is determined to conclude the season on a high note, setting his sights on achieving his best-ever finish at the PSA World Squash Championships. Seeded to face Karim Abdel Gawad in the quarter-finals, Diego Elias seeks redemption against the player who ousted him from the 2023 World Squash Championships at the same stage. Revenge serves as a powerful motivator for the Peruvian athlete, as he prepares to leave his mark on the tournament.

Eight years have passed since Karim Abdel Gawad etched his name into squash history with a triumphant world squash championship title victory, a pinnacle achievement in his illustrious career. His appearance in last year's final marked another memorable milestone. Despite a challenging setback, where he missed the majority of the 2022-2023 squash season due to injury, Karim Abdel Gawad has staged an impressive resurgence, reclaiming his position among the elite as World No.5.

Throughout the 2023-24 squash season, Karim Abdel Gawad's remarkable journey has been underscored by a string of notable victories, with three PSA World Tour titles to his name and four appearances in the semi-finals. His ascent to the top echelons of the sport is a testament to his unwavering determination and undeniable talent. Revered as 'The Baby-Faced Assassin', Karim Abdel Gawad is widely recognised for his exceptional skill and finesse, capable of outplaying any opponent on any given day.

As he sets his sights on the coveted PSA World Championship title once again, Karim Abdel Gawad understands the magnitude of the challenge ahead. To clinch a second PSA World Squash Championship crown, he must summon his utmost skill and determination, bringing his absolute best to the court. With his reputation as one of the PSA World Tour's most formidable players, Karim Abdel Gawad remains a formidable contender, poised to leave an indelible mark on the tournament.

Women’s World No.1 and reigning World Squash Champion Nour El Sherbini has made the PSA World Squash Championships her own over the past several years, reaching the final of the last eight PSA World Squash Championships, winning seven of those. The 28-year-old is a formidable force when these championships come around each year and will be hoping to draw level with Malaysian squash legend Nicol David on eight titles and with the more favourable draw of the ‘top three’, another Worlds final could be coming up for ‘The Warrior Princess’.

Nouran Gohar, a three-time runner-up, enters the this year’s PSA World Squash Championships with a fervent determination to seize her first-ever title, particularly on home turf. Affectionately known as 'The Terminator', Nouran Gohar has recently showed a resurgence in form following a challenging period of injury-induced absence. Her triumphant return was punctuated by a significant victory over Nour El Sherbini at the prestigious El Gouna Squash International, where she claimed the coveted title.

Hania El Hammamy, the current World No.3, has yet to progress beyond the semi-final stage in her World Championships career, having been thwarted by formidable opponents in previous years. In 2019, she fell short against Nour El Sherbini, and more recently, suffered a crushing defeat to Nouran Gohar in last year's tournament. The latter encounter likely left a significant mark, as Hania El Hammamy held match balls but failed to convert them, a missed opportunity that undoubtedly lingers in her memory.

Fresh from leading Belgium to an historic triumph at the 2024 European Team Squash Championships, Nele Gilis steps onto the world stage at her highest seeding yet, positioned at No.4. This marks a significant ascent from her placement in the 2023 PSA World Squash Championships, where she reached her maiden quarter-final. Despite encountering setbacks since the turn of the year, Nele Gilis remains steadfast in her approach, maintaining an unwavering intensity towards her game.

UNSQUASHABLE will be represented at the 2023-24 CIB PSA World Squash Championships by Iker Pajares Bernabeu Lucas Serme Rory Stewart Yannick Wilhelmi and Todd Harrity

As anticipation mounts for the imminent 2023-24 CIB (PSA) World Squash Championships, a retrospective glance at last year's tournament serves to stoke the fervour surrounding the pinnacle event of the PSA World Tour calendar. The narrative of the 2022-23 PSA World Squash Championships brimmed with promise, as the sport's elite prepared to collide in pursuit of glory on the hallowed courts of Chicago.

Returning to the vibrant city of Chicago, USA, the 2022-23 edition of the PSA World Squash Championships attracted a formidable field of 128 players, each harbouring aspirations of immortalising their names on the prestigious trophies.

In the men's championship, the top seed was the prodigious 21-year-old Mostafa Asal, who ascended to the pinnacle of the sport as World No.1 in January 2023, eagerly vying for his inaugural World Squash Championship triumph. However, Mostafa Asal faced formidable competition, notably from the resurgent Ali Farag, a three-time World Squash Champion whose return from injury was underlined by a triumph at the British Squash Open. Adding to the intrigue were leading contenders Diego Elias and Mohamed ElShorbagy, both determined to stake their claim for the coveted title.

In the women’s championship, Nouran Gohar assumed the top seeding, seemingly poised to clinch her maiden World Squash Championship title. Anticipated was a titanic clash with the indomitable Nour ElSherbini, a six-time World Squash Champion affectionately dubbed the 'Warrior Princess', who entered the fray as the No.2 seed. Not to be overlooked was the threat posed by Hania El Hammamy, whose prowess rendered her a formidable adversary capable of upsetting the established hierarchy on any given day.

1st Round:
In the exclusive realm of the PSA World Squash Championships, where every player takes to the court from the onset, the inaugural day unfolds into a whirlwind of action as all 128 contenders vie for progression to the next round.

Scotland's Greg Lobban emerged as an early standout in the men's championship, securing a notable victory by dispatching Swiss No.1 and World No.14 Nicolas Mueller in straight games. Meanwhile, in the women's championship, the spotlight fell on Egyptian prodigy Amina Orfi, who, at the tender age of 15, earned a coveted invite from the Professional Squash Association (PSA) for her triumph at the World Junior Squash Championships. Displaying remarkable poise, Amina Orfi seized the opportunity with aplomb, triumphing over Latvia's Ineta Hopton to advance to the second round.

Amidst the fervour and intensity of the opening day's proceedings, the performances of Greg Lobban and Amina Orfi served as compelling narratives to the world’s most prestigious squash championships.

2nd Round:
Whilst the second round was largely devoid of surprises, the women's event witnessed a singular upset, spearheaded by the youthful sensation Amina Orfi. Facing off against the seasoned American player Olivia Clyne, the audacious approach and trademark Egyptian aggression propelled Amina Orfi to a four game victory in a brisk 46-minute encounter. This triumph not only secured her passage into the last sixteen but also etched her name in the annals of squash history as the youngest woman ever to achieve such a feat at the World Squash Championships. A formidable challenge awaited Amina Orfi in the form of No.3 seed Hania El Hammamy, promising a clash brimming with anticipation.

In the men's draw, the standout result of the round emanated from the squash racket of Egyptian contender Aly Abou Eleinen. Despite his status as the World No.32 and a debutant at the World Squash Championships, Aly Abou Eleinen showed nerves of steel in a scintillating performance that saw him vanquish the No.8 seed Victor Crouin of France.

Further seeding upsets ensued, courtesy of Mohamed Abouelghar and Nathan Lake. Mohamed Abouelghar delivered a captivating display to overcome compatriot and No.10 seed Fares Dessouky in a riveting four-game tussle, while Nathan Lake, buoyed by hometown support in Chicago, orchestrated a spirited upset by dismantling No.15 seed Gregoire Marche in a 51-minute spectacle.

3rd Round:
Day three of the 2022-23 PSA World Squash Championships witnessed a titanic showdown between top seed Mostafa Asal and Joel Makin of Wales, adding another chapter to their storied rivalry. With their previous encounters evenly poised at three wins apiece, anticipation was high. Ultimately, it was the No.1 seed who emerged victorious, prevailing in a gruelling 85-minute battle. Makin displayed resilience by clawing back to trail 2-1, but the 'Raging Bull' asserted his dominance in the fourth game, securing an 11-5 triumph. Meanwhile, Egyptian stalwart Karim Abdel Gawad showed his peak form, dispatching No.6 seed Marwan ElShorbagy to secure a berth in the quarter-finals. In a nail-biting encounter, No.2 seed Diego Elias narrowly averted an early exit, edging past India's Saurav Ghosal in a fifth-game thriller, with a tense 12-10 finish.

The highly anticipated clash between Nele Gilis and Olivia Weaver lived up to its billing, offering a compelling spectacle of attritional squash. With a coveted spot in the quarter-finals at stake, the match unfolded as a tense and gritty affair, culminating in a marathon 94-minute battle. Ultimately, it was Belgium who emerged triumphant, securing representation in the last eight. Another European contender, England's Georgina Kennedy, defied the odds to upset the seedings, delivering a commanding 3-0 victory over Rowan Elaraby to secure her passage into the next round.

The remarkable run of teenage sensation Amina Orfi came to an end in round three, but not without a valiant fight. Despite trailing 2-0 against No.3 seed Hania El Hammamy, the 15-year-old showed her tenacity by rallying back to level the score at two games apiece, tantalisingly close to a quarter-final berth. However, composure and class of Hania El Hammamy proved decisive as she maintained her poise to edge ahead on the scoreboard, eventually sealing the game 11-9 to advance to the next stage.

Quarter Finals:
2016 World Squash Champion Karim Abdel Gawad continued to dazzle in the quarter-finals, extending his fine form with another upset by defeating No.2 seed Diego Elias in straight sets. Karim Abdel Gawad capitalised on the Peruvian's recent wavering performance, seizing control of the match from the outset. While the Egyptian claimed a straightforward opening game, subsequent battles ensued, with Karim Abdel Gawad showing his resilience to clinch the next two games in tightly contested tiebreaks, 13-11 and 14-12. His victory secured a coveted spot in yet another World Squash Championships semi-final, further cementing his status as a force to be reckoned with.

In a thrilling display of Egyptian dominance, Mostafa Asal and Mohamed ElShorbagy were pushed to their limits by compatriots Mazen Hesham and Tarek Momen, respectively. Despite facing formidable challenges, both higher-seeded players exhibited their mettle, ultimately prevailing in gruelling five-game encounters. Joining them in the semi-final fray was Ali Farag, who clinched victory in four games over New Zealand's Paul Coll, completing the star-studded line-up.

Meanwhile, in the women's quarter-finals, the top seeds asserted their supremacy, securing straight-game victories. Nouran Gohar and Nour El Sherbini displayed their class by overcoming Nour El Tayeb and Georgina Kennedy, respectively, while Hania El Hammamy dashed hopes of a home triumph by dispatching Amanda Sobhy. No.4 seed Joelle King also made her mark, securing her maiden World Squash Championships semi-final berth with a commanding performance against Nele Gilis.

Semi-Finals:
The semi-finals unveiled a spectacular lineup, with the opening clash between Nouran Gohar and Hania El Hammamy reignited their fierce rivalry, captivating the Chicago crowd with yet another epic encounter. Despite Nouran Gohar edging ahead 2-1 in the closely contested battle, a spirited resurgence from Hania El Hammamy forced the match into a thrilling fifth game, much to the delight of the spectators. With tensions palpable as the game entered the tiebreak, it was Nouran Gohar who exhibited nerves of steel, clinching a nail-biting victory with a 14-12 scoreline to secure her berth in another World Squash Championships final. Meanwhile, the six-time champion Nour El Sherbini exhibited her trademark dominance, dispatching first-time semi-finalist Joelle King in four games to advance to her seventh consecutive final.

In the men's draw, the clash between top seed Mostafa Asal and defending champion Ali Farag unfolded as a highly anticipated encounter, marking their 16th meeting on the PSA World Tour. Despite the valiant efforts of Mostafa Asal, it was the strategic prowess of Ai Farag that proved insurmountable, as he dictated play with precision and finesse. Despite a brief resurgence from Mostafa Asal in the third game, Ali Farag ultimately powered to victory, sealing the match with an 11-2 triumph in the fourth game. His opponent in the final would be the 2016 champion Karim Abdel Gawad, who replicated his semi-final triumph from that year by overcoming Mohamed ElShorbagy in a captivating five-game duel. Despite trailing 2-1, the strategic acumen of Karim Abdel Gawad proved decisive, as he orchestrated a remarkable comeback to clinch victory and secure his place in the final showdown.

Finals:
In the pursuit of her maiden World Squash Championship title, Nouran Gohar faced a formidable challenge in her compatriot and longstanding rival Nour El Sherbini. The near-invulnerability of Nour El Sherbini in the tournament over the past seven years, having lost only one match in 2017 and clinched the title six times, the task ahead was daunting. The defending champion left no room for doubt as she controlled proceedings from start to finish, securing victory with a commanding 11-4 11-6 12-10 victory to clinch a historic seventh World Squash Championship trophy.

In the men's final, a similar narrative unfolded as defending champion Ali Farag sought to extend his remarkable unbeaten streak in the World Squash Championships. With three consecutive titles under his belt, Ali Farag aimed to join the ranks of legendary compatriot Amr Shabana. Despite signs of fatigue apparent in his opponent Karim Abdel Gawad, the defending champion remained resolute and composed, exhibiting his trademark professionalism as he executed flawlessly to claim his fourth title.

The upcoming 2023-2024 CIB Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Squash Championships are set to return to Cairo, marking the most prestigious event on the PSA World Tour squash calendar. Scheduled between 9th to 18th May, this year’s world squash championships will once again showcase the dominance of Egyptian players, particularly Ali Farag and Nour El Sherbini, the defending champions in the men’s and women’s championships respectively.

The PSA World Squash Championships has a distinguished and rich history since its inception in 1976, with the inaugural Men’s World Squash Championship held in London, coinciding with the launch of the Women’s World Squash Championship in Brisbane, Australia, won by the iconic Heather McKay.

Over the years, the World Squash Championship has traversed the globe, hosted by various nations including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Hong Kong, and Germany. Notably, Australian great Geoff Hunt clinched the first men’s title, initiating a period of Pakistani dominance spearheaded by UNSQUASHABLE Ambassador Jahangir Khan, who was crowned Men’s World Squash Champion six times in his record breaking career, and compatriot Jansher Khan.

Australian and English players have left an indelible mark on the Women’s World Squash Championships, with notable champions like Martine Le Moignan and Susan Devoy. However, it was the era of Australians Michelle Martin, Sarah Fitz-Gerald and Nicol David of Malaysia that defined the 90s and early 2000s, until England’s Laura Massaro and Egypt’s Nour El Sherbini emerged as formidable contenders.

The rise to prominence of Nour El Sherbini, becoming the youngest Women’s World Squash Champion at just 20 years-of-age, underscores the tournament's legacy of showcasing prodigious talent. Her subsequent dominance, alongside male counterparts such as Ali Farag, Karim Abdel Gawad, Ramy Ashour, Mohamed ElShorbagy and Tarek Momen, epitomises the tournament's fiercely competitive spirit.

The 2023-2024 CIB PSA World Squash Championships promises enthralling matches, with the Palm Hills courts serving as the initial battleground before action intensifies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation during the quarter-finals onwards.

Dominant displays from Joseph White and Alex Haydon secured their places in the upcoming 2023-24 Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Squash Championships, to be staged in Cairo, after the top seeds emerged victorious from the Oceania Qualifying Event held at the Carrara Squash Centre on Australia's Gold Coast.

World No.90 Joseph White put an end to the giant-killing run of Rhys Dowling in the men's final with an impressive 11-8 11-8 6-11 11-6 victory on 54 minutes. Rhys Dowling had previously upset the second seed, Temwa Chileshe, but couldn't repeat the feat against a confident Joseph White in the final after the Australian top seed stamped his authority early, winning the first two games 11-8, 11-8. Though Rhys Dowling, World No.175, clawed his way back into the match by winning the third game 11-6, Joseph White eventually sealed the victory in 54 minutes to qualify for the men’s draw of the 2023-24 PSA World Squash Championships.

Alex Haydon also showed her resilience in the women's final. Facing fellow Australian and second seed Sarah Cardwell, both players entered the match undefeated. However, Sarah Cardwell broke Alex Haydon's streak, taking a tight first game 11-8. The 22-year-old Alex Haydon, ranked 79th in the world, refused to be deterred and stormed back, winning the next three games convincingly 11-9 11-3 11-6 to secure victory in 38 minutes.

Rhys Dowling, seeded sixth in the tournament held on the Gold Coast in Australia, managed to withstand a determined fightback from his New Zealand opponent to secure his place in the qualifying final where he will face top-seeded Joseph White.

Initially gaining momentum by clinching two closely contested opening games, Rhys Dowling appeared to be on course for a straight-game victory. However, Temwa Chileshe staged a remarkable comeback, winning the next two games 11-4 11-9, forcing a decisive fifth game. The match continued to ebb and flow, but Rhys Dowling ultimately rediscovered his form, triumphing after an intense 64-minute encounter, winning the final fifth game 11-5.

Joseph White cruised into the final with a dominant performance, dispatching the fifth-seeded Nicholas Calvert 11-3 11-6 11-6 in just 35 minutes.

In the women's qualifying competition, the top two seeds, Alex Haydon and Sarah Cardwell, both advanced to the qualifying final with commanding straight-game victories over Ella Lash and Erin Classen respectively.
